HEALTHY EATING Kids cook up a storm for legendary chef
School’s taster session
Success is on the menu at St Monica’s Primary with pupils set to become the latest protégés of legendar y culinary powerhouse Albert Roux.
Budding chefs from the Coatbridge school welcomed Idris Caldora from the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and Service and Aaron Sobey of Crossbasket Castle in Blantyre for their first taster session.
It saw pupils learn about the importance of healthy eating as part of the Chefs Adopt a School programme.
Students also took on a taste challenge using different flavoured jellies to try and identify the five tastes; they will have the opportunity to build on these new skills with follow-up sessions throughout the year.
Part of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and Service, Chefs Adopt a School is a national charity which aims to inspire children to get hands-on in the kitchen.
Albert Roux said: “Across Scotland I’ve partnered my restaurants with local schools and I’m excited to welcome St Monica’s Primary to the Chefs Adopt a School initiative.
“This marks our eighth adopted school in Scotland; we’re really looking forward to introducing the children to the wonderful natural larder on their doorstep and to share with them the passion my team and I have for food.”
Jacqueline Rafferty, St Monica’s head teacher, said: “Our pupils are really looking forward to learning more about healthy eating and cooking as part of the Chefs Adopt a School programme.
“The first session went really well and we’re looking forward to the next session already.”
The Chefs Adopt a School initiative reaches over 20,000 primary and secondary children across the UK every year with a host of industry experts sharing their invaluable knowledge.
