Daisy has the cutting edge
River City star launches activities
A very special young guest helped the Chapelhall youth development group launch a new programme of events in the village.
River City star Daisy Veldhoven, who plays Charlotte Crozier in the Scottish soap, was on hand at the organisation’s fun day spectacular.
Businesses and community groups in the village, and the Laurel Gardens sheltered housing facility, also supported the launch at Chapelhall senior citizens’ centre by generously donating raffle prizes and selling home baking to raise £206.72 for the group.
The new programme being run by the youth development team – which has started with a drop-in service on Monday nights – came about thanks to the village’s £5000 community grant from Coalfields Regeneration Fund.
Airdrie South councillor Paul Di Mascio, who helped secure the grant and attended the fun day launch, said: “It was great to see such community spirit for the youth development group.
“I was honoured to be asked to say a few words at the start and everyone was delighted to have actress Daisy Veldhoven officially launching the day’s activities.
“The group’s committee and volunteers worked tirelessly to put the event together and it was a huge success; councillors Michael Coyle, Sandy Watson and I were hugely impressed by their infectious enthusiasm.
“I wish the group every success going forward and if the fun day is anything to go by, local children will be in good hands at the group’s upcoming events.”
Chapelhall youth development group member Kirsty McNeil added: “We were very pleased to celebrate the launch of our first service with a community family fun day.
“Young Daisy Veldhoven officially kicked things off by cutting the ribbon and stayed to enjoy the bouncy castles, arts and crafts, biscuit-making and many other fun activities provided by organisations such as the Scouts and Girls’ Brigade.
“The Airdrieonians Supporters Trust provided a ‘Strip Amnesty’ station to support their Kit Aid initiative and handed out free under-16 season tickets.”
Kirsty added: “After receiving the £5000 grant from Coalfields Regeneration Fund, local volunteers came together to plan a much-needed programme of activities for young people in the village.
“We hope that increased use of the senior citizens’ centre, which was recently threatened with closure, will provide opportunities to carry out intergenerational projects benefiting both young people and the
