Fisher eyes better than survival

-

Queen’s Park .. 2 Albion Rovers .. 0 Gary Fisher insists it is far too early to write off Albion Rovers as relegation fodder.

The rock-bottom Coatbridge men slumped to their ninth straight league-and-cup defeat of the season on Saturday at Hampden.

First-half goals from Kurtis Roberts and Billy Mortimer earned Queen’s Park a victory a lot more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.

Rovers played much of the second half with 10 men after defender Barry Eley saw red for a foul on Mortimer in the box.

However, there was light relief for the Rovers fans who saw young keeper Daniel Potts save Scott Gibson’s resulting penalty.

While it became a damage limitation job, Fisher believes Rovers are capable of getting better and does not accept the season will simply be spent scrapping for League Two survival.

The 26-year-old midfielder said:“It is hard to take just now. A losing streak at the start of the season is not ideal but it’s happening and we’re the ones that need to fix it.

“It’s very early in the season to be talking about teams finishing at the bottom of the table. At Christmas time, things could be completely different.

“I think there are a few factors when it comes to us not getting results but we are trying to make sure we get that first point on the board and kick on from there.”

Fisher added:“We need to keep going and keep the heads up. We’ve got to work hard and make it happen rather than hoping it falls to us.”
