Anger over reduction in swimming pool hours

-

The Advertiser’s Facebook community has reacted with fury to the news that opening hours at Airdrie’s John Smith swimming pool are to be reduced by almost 40 per cent.

The facility – which at present opens 88 hours a week – will only be available for 54 weekly hours, starting from next month, due to budget cuts.

Patricia Finnigan responded: “This is totally out of order. Why do children have to suffer once again by not getting their swimming lessons?

“Hang your head in shame North Lanarkshire Council.”

Elizabeth Dunlop added: “Disgraceful, especially after spending all of that money renovating it.”

Allison Murray agreed: “It isn’t that long ago that it was closed for months for renovation; seems bizarre to now cut hours after all that expense.”

Ruth Smith claimed: “Peoples jobs are at risk; it is not acceptable!”

Clare Moffat asked: “How much will this actually save? The temperature has to be maintained while closed.

“Surely a better business plan should be put in place?”

Angela Cox Tarditi added: “People just roll over and take this from North Lanarkshire Council.

“Something is needing done and someone needs to stand up for Airdrie; it’s going to the dogs.”

KW Dunnett said: “Airdrie and Coatbridge have some of the worst rates of obesity and ill health in Scotland and yet we are ‘saving’ money by reducing the few number of facilities that actually keep all ages active.”

Robert McAllister posted: “My wee girl goes to swimming lessons there; say what you want about Airdrie but this pool and its staff are one of its only bright spots.

“I hope this isn’t the beginning of the end.”

Meanwhile, our readers voiced their support for Coatbridge schoolgirl Emily Willis after she was left traumatised following an attack by three thugs on her way home from school.

Greenhill Primary pupil Emily was targeted by the teenage bullies – two girls and a boy – near her West George Street home.

Saima Sadiq said: “What a horrible and frightening experience this must have been for poor Emily. Well done for being brave and sharing your story.”

Christine McMath added: “So sorry to hear this Emily; they are scum and will always be nobodies.

“Hope the police get them.”
