Jailed after crime spree
A Coatbridge man has been jailed after admitting to a spree of offences.
David Stewart, 34, was sentenced to 29 months at Airdrie Sheriff Court last week.
But he will only serve one year as four of the terms will run concurrently.
Stewart, of High Coats, admitted to charges including theft, assault and carrying a weapon. He was sentenced to five months for stealing toys from Argos and an additional four months for assaulting a supermarket worker.
Stewart also stole items from Lidl in Coatbridge.
He was given concurrent sentences for other crimes including threatening to transmit a disease to an employee of Poundland by threatening to bite him.
This was in addition to stealing fragrances from a Next store and punching another supermarket employee.
His defence solicitor said: “He’s got an underlying difficulty with drinking.
“He’s been relying on shoplifting to try and feed himself. He’s got no electricity, no heating and wants to use his time in custody to address his difficulties.
“He’s realistic in his estimations of his situation.”
