Europark meeting

Invitation to residents

- Judith Tonner

A second meeting for those supporting the Europark development proposed for the Calderbank and Carnbroe area is to take place next week.

The event will be held at the Penny Cars stadium in Airdrie next Monday, October 22, from 7pm.

I t will include a p re s e nt a t i o n f rom applicants Orchard Brae as well as a questionand answer session and discussion time.

Residents “keen to find out more about the benefits Europark could bring to our community” are invited to attend the event, which is being organised by Sharon Craig, who chairs North Calder community council.

She told the Advertiser: “The biggest thing for me is that this would give people new houses, and that’s the reason I took up this fight.

“People need homes and the charity Shelter have been talking recently about the lack of houses available – here, the developers would build houses, a shopping centre and a community wildlife park.

“The presentation is to let people know the full facts and to help them find out more; I think it can’t be bad for the community and all of Airdrie.”

Flyers promoting the meeting add: “The plans include 1000 affordable and social houses, a country park, new schools and new retail – things we believe our community needs – [and] this proposal could give [the site] a new lease of life.”

It follows a similar event which took place in July, with Ms Craig saying she had been approached by residents keen to express support for the controversial proposal for 2600 homes and community facilities at the Woodhall and Faskine areas.

Campaigners opposed to the plans and who want to preserve the area’s existing greenbelt land have to date gained thousands of petition signatures, staged marches and litter picks at the affected land and secured the support of various politicians.
