Have your say on democratic process

Parliament Week events

- Ian Bunting

Coatbridge MP Hugh Gaffney is encouraging his constituents to have their say on “politics and democracy” during UK Parliament Week.

Several events marking the occasion – which runs from November 12- 18 – will take place at schools, workplaces and community groups across Monklands.

The festival aims to engage people, especially youngsters, from “different backgrounds and communities, with the UK Parliament and empower them to get involved”.

It also forms part of the Vote 100 programme, celebrating equal voting rights and other milestones in Britain’s democratic history.

Mr Gaffney said: “As member for Coatbridge and Chryston, I welcome the involvement of my constituents during UK Parliament Week.

“I am determined to ensure that our voters and citizens of tomorrow understand how vital their participation is in our democracy.

“And I’m excited to see so many schools, Girl Guides, Scouts and local groups lining up to take part.”

David Clark, head of education and engagement at UK Parliament, added: “There are many exciting events as part of this year’s UK Parliament Week, with many of those happening in Airdrie and Coatbridge.

“Schools, community groups and places of work have a chance to get involved in their democracy; and to also celebrate one of the most important centenaries in British democratic history.

“We can only work towards a more equal society if we all engage with democracy so please find ways to get involved in Monklands.”

This year’s UK Parliament Week will be the largest ever, with more than 7000 registered events and up to 500,000 people taking part.
