Souness delighted to be called a Great Scot
Advertiser assists
Football legend Graeme Souness has acknowledged the Advertiser after he scooped a top award.
The Rangers, Liverpool and Scotland icon received a lifetime achievement gong at the Sunday Mail’s Great Scot awards on Saturday night.
The presentation was made by Steven Gerrard, himself a former Liverpool great and now a successor of Souness in the Ibrox hot seat.
Gerrard took time out from Rangers’ League Cup semi-final preparations to be at the glittering Glasgow event.
Souness is regarded as one of Scotland’s finest ever footballers and enjoyed a stellar playing career, which included winning three European Cups while at Liverpool and guiding Rangers to their first league title in nine years back in 1987.
He was also capped for Scotland 54 times and is now one of the UK’s most popular pundits.
Outwith football, Graeme is an ambassador for the British Heart Foundation and earlier this year he joined the Advertiser’s fundraising campaign for St Andrew’s Hospice, and was instrumental in the success of our celebrity charity match and sports dinner in June.
After picking up his award Graeme said: “I’m honoured to be recognised in this way, especially in Scotland.
“I was delighted to get involved with the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser’s campaign to fundraise for St Andrew’s Hospice.
“It’s a fantastic facility and it was a pleasure to be able to help.”
Capital appeal director Karen McFadyen added: “What a great guy Graeme is. He is genuine, down to earth, and was very moved when he came to the hospice.
“We are delighted he has won this award. It is well deserved and we are very grateful for his ongoing support for our patients, their families and staff.”
