Two Coatbridge schoolboys shone on the small screen back in 1983.

Quiz kings John Tonnar (left) and Tommy Kirkland – both pictured in the September 9 paper of that year – reached the semi-finals of a hit television show on current affairs.

Tommy, 14, and John, 13, represented St Ambrose High on Central Television’s What’s Happening? quiz programme.

The knowledgeable pair just lost out on a place in the final by falling to a narrow defeat to Radio Aire from Leeds at an event held in Birmingham.

The testing quiz was based on news bulletins and national newspapers.
