Girls fall at last hurdle

-

Airdrie Ladies won’t be promoted this season after losing in a league deciding encounter against Glasgow City’s development team.

The Diamonds were beaten 4-0 at Petershill on Thursday night, meaning the title was taken out of their hands before the weekend’s final fixture of the season against Murieston.

Airdrie went into the game ahead of City by one point, meaning a draw would have been enough to keep them in pole position for an incredible title triumph.

But coach Kate Cameron and her side were left“gutted”by the way proceedings transpired.

She said:“Everything was there for us on Thursday but we didn’t connect as a team on the night.

“Glasgow City were the better team and ultimately deserved it.

“The girls know themselves and most of them were in tears afterwards.

“They’ve given everything they had throughout the season but that’s how tight the league can be.

“City are a team made up of young girls but I said to our players‘treat them the same way you would treat any other opponent on the pitch’.

“We hoped our physicality and experience would be enough to see us through as they are a more technical side and train with the City first team four times a week.

“Unfortunately that didn’t keep them at bay.

“I’m gutted for the girls and they’re feeling the same way.

“They put in a lot of hard work and only lost two games all season.”

Airdrie rounded off their season on Sunday with a 4-0 win over Murieston to make sure they finished in a positive way.

Cameron added:“We wanted to make a statement against Murieston and finish the season well.

“We went for a bite to eat together after the game and will have a debrief tonight about next season.”
