Firefighters strike over pay

Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser - - Remembrance -

Coatbridge firefighters took part in a two-day walkout as part of their bid to gain a 40 per cent wage hike in late 2002.

But Strathclyde Fire Board convener Joe Shaw said their wage demands were“out of the question”in an exclusive interview with the Advertiser.

Strikers from the Coatbridge station – pictured in the edition of November 20, 2002 – received strong backing from the Monklands public, with motorists tooting their horns in support as they drove past the Main Street building.

Mr Shaw praised the Army for stepping in but was afraid of the risks a planned eight-day strike could have on the public.
