Birthday bouquet is a boost for Fiona
Flowers cheer couple after family bereavements
Birthday girl Fiona Conve r y and her husband Michael are this week’s recipients of the beautiful Say It With Flowers bouquet in the Advertiser’s hugely popular new feature.
The Glenboig couple were nominated by daughter Cheryl to show the family’s love and support after they sadly suffered two bereavements in the past month.
We surprised them with a beautiful arrangement of flowers kindly provided by Mr Michael’s florist on Main Street in Coatbridge.
Michael’s father, Alex, passed away earlier this month; and just two weeks earlier, Fiona’s beloved brother-in-law, Roddy McLeod, died aged 86.
Roddy was the husband of Fiona’s much-loved older sister, Flora. The couple had looked after her when the sisters’ mum died when Fiona was just 16 – and Flora then sadly passed away on Fiona’s birthday five years ago.
Kind-hearted Cheryl told the Advertiser: “It’s been a hard time for both of them and these flowers will cheer them up.
“My grandad was only diagnosed with vascular dementia in August, so he didn’t get very long at all; we’d all thought he would be here for Christmas.
“He passed away just two weeks after my mum’s brotherinlaw, who was like a father figure – we saw him and Flora like grandparents and my daughter and nephew called them gran and granddad.
“My mum and Flora were very close and had a real sisterly bond; Flora died on my mum’s birthday in 2013 so there’s always a sadness too as it’s her sister’s anniversary.
“It’s her birthday today and my dad’s in a couple of weeks, and I wanted to nominate them as they’ve been through a lot and to cheer them up, especially before Christmas.”
Fiona was presented with the couple’s flowers on the poignant occasion of her birthday by daughter Michelle.
The couple have three daughters – Cheryl, Michelle and Kirsty – along with grandchildren Michael, 10 and Kaci, six, and a new addition to the family arriving in the new year.
Cheryl added: “My parents are brilliant and do so much for us, helping to look after the kids; they’re the best mum and dad you could ask for.”
Nominations have been flooding in as Advertiser readers share stories of their relatives, friends, colleagues and community champions who deserve the weekly floral treat – kindly provided by Elite Flowers in Airdrie and Mr Michael’s in Coatbridge.
Each week, we will be featuring one lucky recipient, telling their deserving story and capturing on camera the moment when they are surprised with their beautiful bouquet.
