A hard-working group doing their bit to improve Monklands villages have received a welcome double boost.

Northern Corr i d o r Community Volunteers, established earlier this year and operating across Moodiesburn, Gartcosh, Chryston, Muirhead and Glenboig, were delighted to scoop two grants from TCV ( The Conservation Volunteers), a national charity that supports local grassroots practical volunteering activities to back its aim of conservation of natural habitats.

The Monklands group received a start- up grant which has enabled them to insure their volunteers during day-to-day tasks.

A support grant has also allowed them the opportunity to buy the tools required for their winter programme of “path maintenance, invasive species removal, fence building and tree planting”.

Volunteer and funding officer Claire Williams explained that the funding has made a “huge difference” to the group, who have successfully completed more than 3000 hours of community volunteering in under nine months of existence, finishing terrific projects including bug hunts, fairy trails and path upgrades.

Claire said: “We are so grateful to TCV for allowing us to apply to the Chestnut Fund.

“High quality tools will mean every hour our volunteers put in really does make huge improvements in our communities.

“It’s also a fantastic chance for our volunteers to gain new skills.”
