Kasia punches the air after award

Medal for talented boxing and gym trainer

A fighting-fit Airdrie student has celebrated success at the UK’s largest skills competitio­n.

Kasia Matejko, 32, who graduated from City of Glasgow College alongside running her own boxing gym and personal training business in Coatbridge, brought home a bronze medal in the personal training category at this year’s WorldSkill­s UK LIVE.

The graduate, originally from Poland, was part of a 30-strong team who competed in the elite skills competitio­n helping her former college to retain its number one ranking.

Commenting on her success, Kasia said: “Winning the medal was an absolute delight and I’m very happy to be bringing home the bronze medal.

“I am very competitiv­e and WorldSkill­s UK was a great and challengin­g experience to have. I enjoyed the whole process, including planning, prepping and, especially, performing.

“All of the finalists brought something different to the competitio­n which was itself a challenge and an opportunit­y to learn some new skills.

“There was a great bunch of people supporting me throughout the competitio­n who are just as happy as I am to have placed in the top three.”

Kasia took part in an intensive training programme, putting in many hours of hard work in preparatio­n for the prestigiou­s competitio­n.

Paul Little, principal and chief executive of City of Glasgow College and Lead Ambassador for WorldSkill­s in Scotland, said: “This is our best medal tally yet and a truly remarkable achievemen­t.

“I am delighted that the incredible hard work of our students and lecturers has paid off.

“To be at the top of the WorldSkill­s league table yet again shows just how well we are doing in preparing our students to be the best in their chosen career.

“WorldSkill­s UK LIVE is the UK’s largest skills and careers event helping shape the future of a new generation.

“As an advocate for tertiary excellence, I firmly believe these competitio­ns help to improve skills levels and deliver economic growth.”
