Eco-friendly St Andrew’s High pupils are launching an environmental art project highlighting the impact of plastic.

A group of 16 fourth- year youngsters are creating an awareness- raising video, to be shared with fellow pupils at the Coatbridge school as well as on social media, showing the “devastating effects” of plastic on the environment.

They are also using plastic bottles to create large- scale artworks, to be displayed around the school to further show the amount being discarded.

St Andrew’s has been boosted as it launches the project by a £500 donation towards art materials from Taylor Wimpey, which is constructing homes in the area at Burnside View in Bargeddie.

Principal teacher of attainment Chris Shaw said: “For our pupils to be able to complete this project, we need to supply a range of materials such as plywood sheets, paint, and brushes.

“This boost and support from Taylor Wimpey will mean we can create some impressive pieces of artwork, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how our pupils can transform useless plastic bottles into interesting and hopefully useful structures.

“We’re extremely grateful for the support we’ve received from Taylor Wimpey and we can’t thank them enough for their generous donation; we’d all like to say a huge thank you to the team.”

Taylor Wimpey sales and marketing director Audrey Ross added: “We’re proud to be able to support St Andrew’s High with funding towards its eco art project, and we’re really looking forward to seeing how this project evolves.

“Being able to work with local businesses and organisations means a great deal to us, and it’s great to know that we’re helping to make a difference to communities.”
