Brophy wants a British title fight

- Andrew Bargh

Caldercruix boxer David Brophy has his sights set on a headline fight in March.

Brophy defeated Ghanian Charles Adamu on points at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena at the start of the month.

That rounded off a winning 2018 for the 28- year- old, who also defeated Norbert Szekeres by TKO in August.

Brophy has been struggling with several injuries recently, most notably a shoulder problem which forced him to take injections to be able to take on Adamu.

Before that he was out of the ring for nearly a year after undergoing eye surgery to correct double vision – a consequence of his participation in boxing.

But after his satisfying victory he aims to to enjoy the festive period and recuperate.

He told the Advertiser: “It was great to get a fight and win under the belt before Christmas as it’s good to be able to enjoy this time of year.

“I did the basics well against Charles and didn’t rush into anything in the ring.

“He was covering his head quite a lot and he is very experienced.

“He made me look good without being in any danger and overall it was a successful performance.

“He’s in his 40s and I think age can be a factor but I’m in good shape and feel pleased with how it went.

“It’s time for me to heal now as I’ve been struggling with a shoulder injury.

“The adrenaline flows during fights and it’s worth going through the pain barrier but I need to give it some rest now before what I hope will be a big 2019.

“I’m looking to be back in the ring in March and assess everything with the physio between now and then.”

But it is not any old return to the ring that Brophy is looking for.

He said: “I’d like a British title fight.

“I want more rounds and experience of big fights in Scotland.

“Hopefully I can get a headline fight as I always seem to sell a good amount of tickets.

“Even when I went to Australia to fight I had half-adozen people follow me over there to support me.

“I seem pretty popular here and always do well with tickets.

“The Caldercruix locals always give me good support as well so it would be good to get a headline event.”

The details of Brophy’s operation last year are not for the faint-hearted.

The boxer’s eye was essentially removed from its socket to allow for a procedure to take place behind his eye and correct a troubling double-vision problem.

Despite his recent injury troubles Brophy says he feels in top shape and is strong in confidence.

He continued: “Last year I was struggling slightly with confidence due to my injuries.

“The eye operation affected that and I was out for the best part of a year.

“My eye was taken out and the surgery was really needed.

“The double vision developed due to boxing and to continue with it would have been far from ideal.

“I got it fixed sharpish before it got worse.

“I’m feeling good now, though, and my body is in good shape.

“I work hard on that and I’m confident that once I’ve rested my shoulder over the winter then I’ll be ready to get back in the ring.”

Reflecting on his year, Brophy continued: “It’s been a good year for me and I wanted that second win before the year was out.

“It’ll be hard not to punch in the gym but I need to recover.

“I’ll be running to keep fit but nothing more.”
