W/D bring home maximum points

-

Fort William ........ 12 Wayside/Drum .... 32 Waysiders/Drumpellier continued their excellent league form with a thumping victory in the Highlands.

W/D travelled back down to Coatbridge with another six tries on the board and maximum points in the bag.

Due to a depleted squad, coaches Steven Wilson and David Brown were forced to dust off their boots and take to the field.

But they were not out of place and the Langloan men should have crossed the try line twice before their side opened the scoring.

Man of the match Gary Ferguson scored three tries, Reece Devlin notched a brace and David Power rounded off the win.

Having secured the bonus point before half-time, W/D took their foot off the gas and allowed their hosts to dominate the second period.

Although the attacking prowess stalled, the W/D defence held firm throughout the half and kept their opponents’points tally fairly low.

Hat-trick hero Ferguson, Tony Campbell and Jimmy Bates were praised by coach Wilson, who added: “We were reduced to 16 players on Friday night due to some late call-offs but the boys who turned up did the business again.

“The defence has been outstanding this year and has only conceded 72 points in nine games. That’s by far the best in the league. The main thing we need to concentrate on now is being ruthless in attack.

“In every game this season we have left around 20 points on the park as our boys lose sight of the game plan.

“When they focus on it again the scoreboard is soon ticking along quickly.”

Wilson continued:“Although I’m delighted with the score and attitude of the players today, we need to ensure everyone makes the effort to get along to training so we can keep this momentum going.”

W/D’s win at Fort William followed another heavy victory against Moffat.

The Coatbridge side returned from a month’s absence, due to the autumn internationals, and made up for lost time in Langloan.

Ross McConville scored a hat-trick of tries with Lee McGowan going over twice. Matty Coey, Josh Wilson, Reece Devlin, Craig Allan and Ryan McRobert also went over in the 62-10 win.

W/D remain top of the Tennents’ West Region Division Three by four points from Glasgow Uni Medics.

They face Birkmyre this weekend.
