Pupils at St Dominic’s Primary were in fine voice as they marked the official opening of their new school.
They performed a medley of uplifting songs for guests who gathered at their new building in Petersburn to celebrate the school’s return home.
North Lanarkshire provost Jean Jones unveiled a commemorative plaque which will be displayed in the entrance area; and Bishop of Motherwell Joseph Toal gave the blessing and dedication, saying: “I hope this school can become a home of truth, wisdom, faith and learning to all.”
Staff and parents joined the special guests to celebrate the official opening of the £7 million building, which opened its doors in September to replace the previous school.
The former building had been destroyed by fire in March 2015 and the school was based for more than three years in classrooms at St Margaret’s High.
Provost Jones said: “It’s a wonderful design and includes a fantastic range of learning and play provision, both indoors and outdoors.
“Our contractors Morrison Construction have done a marvellous job. The school and nursery are the latest successful project of our Schools and Centres 21 programme.”
The official opening also came shortly before the retirement of head teacher Teresa Verrecchia at the end of the Christmas term, following 22 years as head teacher at St Dominic’s.
She said: “It’s been a real honour to serve as head teacher – our staff are incredibly hard- working and committed to giving the best learning opportunities to our pupils.
“I’m grateful to all the pupils, parents and staff for their incredible support over the years.”
Education convener Councillor Frank McNally said: “Teresa has led her school with great distinction over many years and in recent years her leadership was certainly required – it was vital in keeping the school community of St Dominic’s together, and ensuring the children continued to flourish.
“Teresa deserves our deepest appreciation and heartfelt gratitude for everything she’s contributed, and we wish her all the very best for a long and enjoyable retirement.”
