Scottish award-winning school is a class act

-

Staff and pupils at St Stephen’s Primary proved they were top of the class in numeracy after receiving recognition at this year’s prestigious Scottish education awards.

The Coatbridge school’s language and communication support centre scooped the national award in the “raising attainment in numeracy” category at a ceremony in Glasgow, which was attended by pupils and staff from across the school.

Head teacher Martine Watt, told the Advertiser: “It’s really wonderful news for everyone associated with our school that we have won this prestigious award.

“I’d like to thank all our pupils, parents and staff for their hard work, commitment and enthusiasm which has resulted in this national recognition.

“Our guided approach is about handing over the lead in learning to children.”

The awards, which are run in conjunction with the Advertiser’s sister paper, the Daily Record, and the Scottish Government, are now in their 18th year and recognise achievements in education.

Martine added: “Over the past two years we have worked hard to develop teacher understanding of the children’s mathematical thinking.

“This is a result of the great professional development opportunities that we’ve had in maths.

“Seven of our teachers undertook a masters course in maths with Strathclyde University. Through this, they were introduced to leading educational academic Dr Lio Moscadini, who has become a real friend of the school.

“He has worked with our staff and pupils in the classroom and in collaboration with academics from Wisconsin and Illinois universities, through Skype sessions.

“We are incredibly proud of the hard work and commitment of all staff and parents to this area of school improvement, which is truly transformational.” erection of wall with postmounted signage; at 19 Glasgow and Edinburgh Road, Newhouse.
