Football fever at society as display achieves its goal

-

The Lanarkshire Philatelic Society’s latest meeting hit the back of the net to entertain members.

Entitled“Paul and Ken, the Accies Men”, the display was tinged with sadness as the material was gathered by the“greatly missed”late Paul McGowan.

It proved to be a football spectacular fitting of Paul’s memory as members viewed stamps, covers, miniature sheets, postmarks, posters and programmes relating to the FIFA World Cups of “Argentina 1978, Italy 1982, Mexico 1986, Italy 1990 and France 1998”as well as Euro 96 in England.

The society’s Alan Rushworth completed the event’s first round by presenting a “wonderful display”relating to the“much lamented”Third Lanark FC.

This showcased programmes, tickets, newspaper cuttings and many covers with the signatures of managers and players leading up to the club’s demise in April 1967.

Ken Liddell, wearing a Hamilton Accies red and white scarf, gave a brief but excellent display of postal material relating to the club before focusing on the island of Colonsay.

Honorary vice president Sheila Sinclair led members in thanking their guests for presenting“very interesting and variable displays”before wishing everyone on hand all the best for the festive period.

The society will be back in the new year for further meetings, which are held in Hamilton’s Caledonian Bowling Club.

Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history and postcards is welcome to attend the group, and become a member; visit www.lanarkshireps.co.uk/ to find out more.
