Ex-skipper: Rovers can’t be Brechin bad now

-

Former skipper Mick Dunlop admits Albion Rovers run the risk of a relegation dogfight in League Two this term as they prepare to face Brechin.

The centre-back enjoyed a glittering four year stint at Cliftonhill enjoying title wins and cup runs and has been picked in the Advertiser’s Albion Rovers Team of the Decade.

However, the 37-year-old admits these are changed days from under managers Paul Ward and Darren Young as they prepare for a crunch tie at Glebe Park.

He reckons the pressure will be on

Rovers’in Angus but backed Kevin Harper to keep the SPFL status in 2020.

“Winning the league with Rovers was a great achievement,”said the former captain.

“To win the league alongside my brother was a huge achievement for me and is probably the highlight.

“We then managed to stay up and even challenge for the top four. We took it right to the final day which is unheard of for us.

“What I achieved there is probably what most players would be happy with in a career, and these times don’t come along too often for a club like Albion Rovers. They are in an extremely difficult league.

“You would have looked at Brechin a couple of weeks ago and maybe thought they could be cut adrift; it doesn’t look like it will be that way now.

“There isn’t a safety net and there is a risk for every team from fifth place down right now.

“Teams are spending big in the division below and you wouldn’t want to be playing them in the play-off. You don’t want to be the one that takes a club with 100 years of history out of the leagues.”
