Ricky pays his respects

-

Ricky Burns has joined the heartfelt tributes paid to Coatbridge boxing icon Rab Bannan.

For decades, kids have been kept on the straight and narrow by the discipline instilled by Rab at The Barn boxing club.

He played a key role in the development of three-weight world champion Burns.

Burns posted on Twitter: “My thoughts go out to all of Rab’s family, friends and to anyone who’s stepped through the doors at The Barn ABC and had the privilege of training alongside this man.

“What he’s done for Coatbridge and the impact he’s had on so many people’s lives is special. Rest up Roberto.”

Former world featherweight champion Scott Harrison said on social media: “Sad to hear of the passing of Rab Bannan.

“Scotland and boxing has lost a true legend of the sport! Thoughts and prayers are with Rab’s family at this time.”

Newarthill Amateur Boxing Club remembered Rab in a statement, adding: “Sad news today that a very good friend to the club, Rab Bannan, has sadly passed away.

“Rab inspired hundreds of kids, not just from Coatbridge, but from all over the country.

“Rab’s dedication to boxing and to the kids he took under his wing was second to none.”

A statement from Glasgow City Boxing Club said: “Rab was one of the most well known and respected faces of Scottish boxing.

“A man who had such a positive impact on anyone who walked into the famous Barn ABC.

“He will be sadly missed by the entire boxing community.”

The Fighting Scots Gym coaches added: “He was a true gentleman and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts go out to Rab’s family, friends and all at Barn ABC.”

Promoters MTK Scotland continued: “Absolute legend of a man. Did a lot of hard work for the people in boxing and Coatbridge.”
