Fans must return for opening games

- MARK PIRIE

Albion Rovers boss Brian Reid claims it would be “ridiculous” not to allow fans into their opening day clash with Stenhousemuir.

Reid will take charge of his first League Two game as Rovers gaffer as the Warriors visit Cliftonhill.

The former Stranraer manager admits he would be baffled if supporters are turned away and the opener is played behind closed doors following the Covid- 19 outbreak.

“We are pleased with that for an opening day fixture,” he told the Advertiser.

“It’s a game we can look to get a good start for the season at home.

“By October 17 you’re thinking you should have fans in by then as well. I mean, jeezo, it would be ridiculous.

“I don’t want to get into the politics of it, but we got 300 odd fans at a home game last season.

“If we can’t get fans in you can’t really get people anywhere.

“I guess with fans really wanting football to come back we might get a few more away fans. You’d expect a good support from Stenhousemuir.

“I don’t see any reason that by October the government won’t be allowing fans into clubs like ours.”

Airdrie goalkeeper Max Currie is relishing the tough fixture list handed to the Diamonds in a reduced 27-game season.

With two trips to title rivals Falkirk and Partick Thistle it looks to be a tough run for Ian Murray’s men, but Currie reckons there is a reason the sides are in the third-tier.

The 23- year- old said: “With Peterhead at home it’s a game we will be expected to win, and then Partick Thistle away, it’s a good couple of games.

“Airdrie went to Falkirk last season and won; we can do it again. Let’s face it, although Partick Thistle and Falkirk might be expected to win the league, they are in League One just like everybody else.

“There is no real reason we can’t go to these places and get a result.

“Playing against the better teams and getting a result will set you up for the season we want to have.

“Momentum is important early on with the 27 games. We will most importantly try to win the home games, and this season that should make us at least about the play-off positions.”
