Warm tributes to ‘ local hero and absolute legend’

Advertiser readers flooded our Facebook page with warm tributes to beloved boxing trainer Rab Bannan.

Charlene Wason said: “An amazing man who gave youth hope and pride in themselves. He didn’t just teach boxing, he had a spark that gave people hope that a better future is ahead.

“He believed in people and it’s very sad that there aren’t more people like Rab about.”

Louise Norton agreed: “So sad. He helped so many in the community over the years.

“Thinking of his family; a massive loss to all.” Jga Arm suggested: “So sad. I honestly believe there should be a statue of him put in the Main Street for all he achieved. He was an absolute gentleman.” A view backed by Jamie Martin:

“This man should be remembered for ever more. A statue should have pride of place at the park behind the Barn boxing club.”

Chris McLean had the pleasure of learning from Rab: “Training down The Barn were the best days of my childhood and made me – and countless others – a champion!

“Rab touched so many people’s lives; he was a legend of a man!”

Jac Fleming posted: “Coatbridge will never see the likes again. Rab was a wee man who had a heart larger than life itself.”

Sarah Hill commented: “A local hero and absolute legend. RIP Rab.
