Hero romp just falls short of being super
Marvel’s Avengers has been box-office gold at the cinema, but in recent years the closest gamers have got to taking control of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes has been thanks to Lego or the Alliance beat-em-ups.
So there was some excitement surrounding Avengers hitting consoles. However, the recent beta release left fans feeling less‘super’ about these superheroes.
However, at its core, Avengers is a beautifully-crafted game that offers much for Marvel fans — the only question is whether they keep coming back for more.
The game mode features a story that could easily have been the plot for a future Avengers story, centred round a young Muslim girl called Kamala Khan — aka Ms Marvel — who must try to reunite the group after a celebration event for them, A-Day, goes horribly wrong and they must take down the nefarious AIM organisation and a host of familiar bad guys.
The story mode allows you the chance to take control of some top heroes, like Iron Man and Hulk, and they all bring their own fighting style, but the action can feel sluggish and repetitive, especially as most of the minions are an endless stream of robots.
Away from the story mode, there are regularly updated online co-op missions to play too, however you may need to‘buy’your favourites characters.
All in all, it’s enjoyable and at times thrilling, but you can’t help feeling that this band of heroes should have been even‘Mightier’.
