Diamonds ’Well lesson kicks off warm-up

-

Airdrie Ladies hope to face off against more teams at their level in pre-season after a warm-up drubbing from rivals Motherwell.

The Diamonds impressed in the first half holding the SWPL1 side 1-0 at half-time, however the Steelwoman would run out 9-0 victors in the second half.

Secretary Laura Mcelroy was delighted to see the side back in action for the first time in seven months, despite the scoreline.

She hoped Airdrie would be able to test themselves against teams in the Championship rather than be limited by local Covid restrictions.

Mcelroy told the Advertiser:“we didn’t expect much going up against a Premiership team but it was good to see the team out there.

“It was important to get a run out again, but with the local restrictions we can only play teams from our area at the moment. The SWF will only approve teams between Lanarkshire clubs, so we have to play the likes of Motherwell.

“We have games planned in Glasgow against Glasgow Women’s

Development and BSC Glasgow which is more at our level, but they have to be approved.”

Mcelroy also can’t wait to have fans back cheering them on at the Penny Cars Stadium, adding:“it’s really strange to have games without any fans cheering you on.

“At times they can be like another player for us.”
