Council green-lights 535 new homes on village land

- IAN BUNTING

Planning consent has been secured for 535 new homes in Glenboig.

Taylor Wimpey West Scotland has received the go- ahead from North Lanarkshire Council for the provision of the properties through the development of land at the former Garnqueen Farm, off the village’s Main Street.

The 45.6 acre site is already identified for housing as part of a wider masterplan and it benefits from having planning permission in principle, which was granted by the local authority in February 2017.

The approved application for Glenboig represents a significant investment in the area by Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, and the development will deliver a range of two and three bedroom semi-detached homes, as well as four bedroom detached homes in a variety of styles and sizes.

The development integrates with the extension to the nature reserve, provides new footpath connections, a centralised area of open space and stone sculptures to represent the site’s agricultural history.

The design has also been granted “building for nature” accreditation and in addition to the community hub adjacent to the site, the proposal includes several other benefits through a Section 75 Legal Agreement with North Lanarkshire Council which will see contributions towards education, road upgrades and play facilities.

This site forms part of the Gartcosh and Glenboig Community Growth Area, encouraging the development of more than 3000 homes, as well as the provision of enhanced community amenities which are connected by the Seven Lochs Wetland Park, which is Scotland’s largest urban nature park.

Colin Blair, technical director for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, said: “We are delighted to confirm that we have secured planning permission for the land off Main Street in Glenboig.

“As well as an impressive range of new homes, our development will provide a range of economic benefits for the local Glenboig area which will include jobs, as well as the attraction of new customers to local businesses.

“We believe this development will be a great addition to the local area and it also complements our other developments in North Lanarkshire.

“Our development of new homes in Glenboig will provide potential buyers’ access to a great place to call home that benefits from an exceptional range of local amenities.”
