Ryan Stevenson insists Albion Rovers have nothing to fear from a tricky trip to Elgin City on Saturday as they look to take another step towards preserving their League Two status.

Rovers beat rock-bottom Brechin City 4-2 at Glebe Park on Saturday to take a huge step towards that goal and were set to host Cowdenbeath on Tuesday night as the Advertiser went to press.

This weekend promotion chasing Elgin welcome Rovers to Borough Briggs and Stevenson says although City have an impressive home record, losing just twice this season, that shouldn’t faze them when they make the long journey north.

The striker said: “We’ve got nothing to fear and we have to go into it with that mindset.

“We are going there to win. No matter who it is in front of you, it’s 11 v 11 and no matter how long it takes us to get there or how uncomfortable the journey is, we are going up there to do a job for the club and for the fans.

“We’ll be going up there to win. I know the manager will reiterate that to the players and I will be doing that when I’m on the pitch.

“When it hits kick-off, there is nothing to fear.

“We played leaders Queen’s Park [last month in a 3-0 defeat] and I felt we held our own against them in stages, so there is nothing for us to fear in this league.

“Going to Elgin will be difficult, as every game in this league is, but it’s one that we will be looking to win.”

Stevenson arrived at the club last month and has settled in well, netting two goals in his first seven appearances, and he reckons there is the quality in the squad to ensure Rovers avoid any end of the season drama.

The 36-year-old added: “In the first couple of sessions I thought there was a lot of young boys who maybe lacked a bit of experience and guidance.

“But having worked with the manager and the backroom staff before when I was at Ayr, I know how good they are and I know how enjoyable it is working with them so I knew they were doing everything they can.

“But sometimes you need that wee bit of experience on the pitch and I think the manager has done that, bringing some experienced boys in to help.

“You need that blend, especially when you are down the bottom of the league. You need boys who have been through it before and I think what we’ve got now is a good blend.”
