The grandson of legendary Scottish football broadcaster Archie Macpherson took home the Drumpellier Cup at Drumpellier Golf Club earlier this month – and he thanked his famous relative for playing a part in his success.

Twenty-one-year-old Scott Macpherson, representing Bothwell Castle GC, claimed the title by one shot from local player Graham Rankin.

Following his victory, Scott revealed it was Archie (pictured, top right) who “put a club in his hands.”

This was Scott’s first Lanarkshire Order of Merit trophy and he admits it was achieved while he wasn’t at his best.

He said: “It was good; I didn’t have my best stuff, but I putted really well and played really well round the greens.

“I managed to get some decent scores and I did enough in the end.

“I’ve been golfing since I was six or seven years old, so about 13 years.

“I started playing golf up in Crail in Fife.

“I’m Archie Macpherson’s grandson and it was pretty much him that got me started.

“He was the first one to put a club in my hands when we were up in Crail in the summertime when I was a kid, and I think I just took it up naturally from then.

“I’ve always been really good, but I’ve never thought about going professional – I enjoy the sport, the competitive edge of it as well, but it’s a hobby.

“I don’t think I’ve quite enough to go that extra step, but I enjoy the level I’m at, and it would be more enjoyable to keep it as a hobby.”

Scott, who has recently graduated from the University of Stirling with a degree in geography, says the trophy win will give him more confidence.

He added: “I’ve been going in for competitions for a little while but I’ve never really came out on top of any of them until now.

“That’s my first one, so I’m chuffed, and hopefully it’s the first of many.

“You just have to keep giving yourself chances, you can’t assume you’re going to win every one, and just take every one as they come.

“I played well, just not quite my best from tee to green, but I still managed to get the job done.

“That just shows me that if I tidy it up a little bit more I could go even further.”
