Firms join forces for ultimate desserts

- JUDITH TONNER

Two of Lanarkshire’s favourite food firms have teamed up to create “the ultimate Scottish desserts” in honour of the current national ice cream month.

Coatbridge confectionery manufacturer Lees of Scotland and Hamilton-based artisan ice cream maker Equi’s have launched two special recipes combining their trademark products in the unique collaboration.

Now they have shared recipes for both their “Scottish summer piece” and strawberry bomb, inviting sweet-toothed residents to try creating both – and also plan to give away a variety of treats through their social media pages.

The former sandwiches double vanilla ice cream between strawberry and white chocolate-dipped meringues, accompanied by fresh strawberries and raspberries.

Meanwhile, the strawberry bomb is a sundae consisting of Equi’s strictly strawberry vegan ice cream layered with chunks of Lees jam teacakes and snowballs, topped with raspberry sauce.

Chris Law of Equi’s Ice Cream said: “We love Lees’ products and as we’re all spending more time at home we thought we’d create some recipes for people to try at home.

“You can’t beat a jammy teacake and we’ve elevated that snack to create the ultimate Scottish dessert with our award-winning ice cream.

“The proof is in the pudding!”

Lees chief executive Clive Miquel added: “It’s great to partner with a Scottish ice cream favourite like Equi’s and showcase the many ways you can enjoy our snowballs, teacakes or meringues, and we hope families come together this summer and try these tasty desserts.”

The indulgent desserts were up for grabs in competitions held on the brands’ Facebook and Instagram pages, @equisicecream and @ leesofscot, to mark ice cream day last Sunday, July 18.

Equi’s, which will celebrate its centenary next year, has won multiple awards for its luxury ice cream – including the prestigious title of UK champion at the 2020 national ice cream awards.

Lees is currently marking its 90th anniversary year; it has an 80,000 square foot factory in Coatbridge where its range of confections including its macaroon bar are manufactured.
