Mini-roundabout to be installed on main road

- BY JUDITH TONNER

A new mini-roundabout is to be installed on the main road through Glenmavis at the junction of a street now leading to a new development of 146 homes.

It is to be put in place where the B803 Raebog Road meets Windsor Drive, while the existing 30mph zone on the main road is set to be extended – eight pairs of speed cushions are also due to be installed along the residential area and adjacent Irvine Street.

Dawn Homes are currently constructing their major new Mayfields development on nearby land, which was part of the former Pinwhinnie minerals site, and which is located behind and will be accessed from Windsor Drive.

The existing junction is due to be converted into a miniroundabout, and the existing 30mph zone applying to Raebog Road as it runs through Glenmavis is also set to be extended by an additional 450 metres to the east, meaning it would then cover the entire length of the village’s residential area.

A public consultation on the proposal to reduce the limit from the current 40mph on an additional section of the road ended earlier this month, which would see the lower-speed section of the B803 further extended to reach to the Dunnet Avenue area.

If no objections are received, the change would be confirmed at next month’s meeting of North Lanarkshire Council’s (NLC) environment and transportation committee.

Council information on the plan noted: “The speed limit change is considered necessary to promote road safety and to facilitate the construction of the mini-roundabout.”

Speed bumps are also set to be installed along the length of Windsor Drive and Irvine Street “to restrict vehicle speeds in the area” to 20mph.

A separate public consultation is currently underway on plans for the speed cushions, which would each be 1.9m long, 1.75m wide and sit up to 70mm high.

Traffic calming on the residential roads was included as a condition of the planning permission for the new houses, “in recognition of the anticipated increase in vehicle trips as a result of the development”.

A statement from NLC said: “The consultation is currently ongoing and a final decision will be made by councillors.”

Existing residents had previously expressed concern about the traffic impact of the new development during the 2019 planning application process, particularly the number of vehicles which would then be using Windsor Drive and attempting to access Raebog Road.

However, councillors agreed with planners that the new housing could be “accommodated without detriment to the surrounding area”.

The developers told the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser at that time: “Dawn Homes is sympathetic to the impact of any new housing on existing infrastructure and we are working closely with NLC to mitigate any significant impacts.”
