College elects trio of new student presidents for year

- IAN BUNTING

Three new student presidents – two from Monklands – have been elected to New College Lanarkshire’s (NCL) Students’ Association for the academic year 2021-2022.

Hannah Carragher, Kellyann Mcgraith and Alexandra Romeo Imade will be the voice of every student at NCL and will be working to “make the student experience the best that it can be”.

Each will take on a different set of responsibilities and will be based at one of the college’s three main campuses.

Hannah, 20, from Coatbridge, is the student president of curriculum and engagement and studies at the campus in her home town.

She is working with key members of staff to ensure students have the best academic experience possible, and has oversight of the class rep system, will lead campaigns, and focus on issues connected to learning and teaching.

Hannah has studied make-up artistry for four years at NCL, having met lecturer Rosheen Mcgowan through the schools partnership programme.

She said: “Rosheen showed me the wonders of make-up and showed me that education could be fun and should be a positive experience rather than negative.

“The staff at NCL are some of the most kind and welcoming people I have ever met. They really helped me feel welcomed as a shy, anxious student and took time out of their day to check up on me.

“I feel confident I can do this role due to my experience at NCL and its schools programme.”

Kellyann, 41, of Airdrie, is the student president of resource and wellbeing and attends the Cumbernauld campus.

She is working to uphold NCL’S equality and diversity policy and to improve the representation and engagement of under-represented groups.

Kellyann will be focusing on health and wellbeing issues including accessibility, travel, mental health, student finances, student support, liberation and equality.

Having enjoyed a career as a hairdresser, working in a call centre and as a sous chef in a busy restaurant, Kellyann took a career break to raise a family – and returned to education to study HNC and HND fitness, health and exercise at the college’s Broadwood campus.

She said: “I loved the warm welcome from lecturers that I met and their enthusiasm and encouragement, so I knew I wanted to study at Broadwood campus from my first interview.

“I was a class rep and faculty rep whilst studying and really enjoyed listening to students, helping people and speaking up for the students to ensure we all have a positive experience.

“I feel that being involved with the Students’ Association as a student president is just a continuation of more of the same great and really important work.”

Alexandra takes on the role of the student president of sustainable partnership and is based at the college’s Motherwell campus.

The 24-year-old, who is originally from Spain and now lives in Glasgow, completed HNC and HND music at NCL’S Motherwell campus having been introduced to the college through its partnership with Glasgow Music Studios.
