Craig fight at UFC Vegas called off

-

Airdrie fight star Paul Craig has suffered a blow after his big bout at UFC Vegas 36 was postponed.

The 33-year-old was due to return to the Octagon on September 4 to face Alexander Gustafsson, but his opponent has had to withdraw due to injury.

News of the postponement broke om Saturday and the exact nature of the Swede’s injury hasn’t been disclosed, although it is understood it was sustained during a recent training camp.

The 34-year-old, nicknamed ‘the Mauler’, was all set to make his return to action against Craig in the Fight Night event, having been on a three-fight losing skid against Fabricio Werdum, Anthony Smith and Jon Jones.

His last official victory in the Octagon came against Glover Teixeira in May 2017.

It is unclear if Craig will still compete in the event.

Neither Craig or Gustafsson have commented on the news since it was revealed.

Craig is currently on a three-fight winning streak, most recently defeating Jamahal Hill at UFC 263 in a brutal fight, which saw Craig dislocated his opponent’s arm.

It was set to be a huge fight for Craig , who was looking to further cement his path to becoming a UFC title contender and breaking into the top 10 in the rankings.

Craig is currently ranked at number 12 in the light heavyweight division and will be desperate to break into that elite group as soon as possible.

UFC Vegas in Nevada will be headlined by Derek Brunson versus Darren Till.
