Bullseyefor Martinashe emulatesdad

Martin Moulds was following in his father’s footsteps when he claimed the Airdrie singles darts title earlier this month.

The 41-year-old, playing for the

Eagle Inn in Coatbridge, beat Kenny Campbell 4-2 in the final at Airdrie Working Men’s Social Club.

It capped a remarkable family achievement as Moulds’father, Frank, won the tournament in 1987.

He also won the famous TV darts game show Bullseye and Moulds admits it was nice to emulate his father’s achievement at the Airdrie singles, 37 years later.

“It was really good to win it,”moulds admitted.“i won 4-2 in the final after being 1-0 down but I battled back well.

“There were around 80 players in the competition. There are usually more but because of Covid the numbers dropped.

“My dad won the same tournament back in 1984.

“It’s a nice moment and my dad also won Bullseye. He was a brilliant player and a lot better than me.

“Every year someone will message me and say your dad is on TV because repeats are shown on Challenge TV.

“I was only a young boy but I remember I got a mountain bike out of it. He also won a couple of gold watches, a washing machine, a football table and a few hundred quid.

“My dad played darts when I was a young lad so there was always a dart board and darts kicking about in the house. I picked it up at 16 or 17 and I started playing it then.

“At local level, darts isn’t as popular as it used to be.

“How many pubs do you go to these days and find a dart board? Not many.

“There’s not as many younger players taking up the sport anymore.”

Although Moulds is a talented darts player, he has no ambition of playing at a higher level and his passion is for another sport.

“The next step up is probably going to play for your county but I’d never do that. There are county players within the league and that is at BDO standard,” he said.

“The next step up after that is the PDC. I just like playing in the local tournaments and I’m probably not good enough to play at a higher level.

“You need to take it seriously like a lot of the guys.

“I actually prefer playing golf so if I was going to practice anything it would be on the golf course.

“I can play darts at a decent level but I don’t take it seriously enough to play tournaments all the time.”
