Young Brodie lands senior title

- PAUL THOMSON

An Airdrie Harriers teen blew the competition away at the Scottish Championships last week to take the senior 400m title at Grangemouth.

Brodieyoung finished almost a full second clear of Lasswade rival Guy Learmonth (48.93) with a time of 48.06 seconds, while Kilbarchan AAC’S Stephen Johnston came third in 50.23.

The 18-year-old made it back-to-back titles at the Championships, having won gold in the under-17 event during the last edition in 2019. And he was delighted with his display.

He told the Advertiser:“that was my first senior title, so it meant quite a lot to me.

“It’s nice to end the season with a national title, especially being a bit younger than senior level, so it was nice to step up onto a bigger stage and win a medal.

“It was good to have a trophy at the end of it as well.

“Moments like that make all the hard work you’ve put in over the year worth it.

“But it wasn’t an easy race. Guy was in the lane next to me, so I knew I had to be fast as soon as the gun went off.

“He is an 800m runner so I was a bit scared that he’d have that stamina at the end, but I ran a good race and I felt I executed it well.”

Brodie has spent the past decade with the

Harriers and after finishing the 2021 outdoor season on a high, he is setting some big targets for next year - in particular the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

He added:“i’m heading into the winter training now, getting in a few solid months and prepping for big events next year.

“Hopefully that will mean the Commonwealth Games and even the World Championships at under-20 level.

It’s just about trying to keep a high level of performance.”
