‘Cairn covid chaos hits Camby clash

-

Gartcairn’s massive West of Scotland Conference B clash with Cambuslang Rangers on Saturday was postponed after a Covid outbreak at the Airdrie club.

It was set to be a top of the table clash at MTC Park but numerous players within the Cairn squad tested positive, while other players were still awaiting the results of tests when the decision to call the game off was made on Friday morning.

Speaking just after the announcement, Gartcairn assistant Scott Mills explained: “we had players contact us during the week to inform us of their positive tests.

“We cancelled training and we’ve had more players telling us that they have symptoms and they are getting tests.

“It’s been a waiting game but fingers crossed that people will be negative so they are safe.

“The most important thing is that the positive players are able to self-isolate, get better and fully recover.

“We’ve been looking forward to the game all week. We played the Scottish Cup last week and got a positive result.”

Both Gartcairn and Cambuslang had been going well in the division, but results at the weekend have seen the Camby Gers knocked off top spot in Conference B by St Cadoc’s, while ‘Cairns have slipped to fifth in the standings.

Mills added: “we wanted to try and cut the gap between ourselves and Cambuslang.

“It’s just one of these things and you can’t be in control of what is happening in the world just now.”

Gartcairn are due to travel to Greenock Juniors on Saturday in the league, but it remains to be seen if they will be able to fulfil that fixture as well.
