£20,000 for return of son

- KAITLIN EASTON

A controversial Coatbridge gym owner has offered a £20,000 reward after claiming his son has been abducted and taken to Romania.

Craig Windsor has put up the five-figure bounty because estranged wife Mihaela Petroi has taken Craig Jr, six, to her homeland.

Former boxer Windsor, 38, says Mihaela, 32, has refused to return to Scotland after flying out more than six months ago.

Now, Windsor – once jailed for attacking a gangland rival – is willing to give money to anyone who helps get the youngster back.

Windsor, who claims he turned his back on crime since being released from prison, said: “Mihaela has fled the country with my boy and it’s ripped my heart out.

“She went back to Romania on February 26. I wasn’t too happy about it but she said she had paperwork to sign for her uncle and would be back in two weeks.

“After around a week she told me, ‘If you want to see Craig again then you will need to come to Romania’.

“She’s refused to bring him. The only thing I want in my life is my son back in Scotland. I’m willing to put £20,000 down to anybody if they can get him back.”

The former lightmiddleweight boxer, who has been warned by police his life is in danger at least 10 times, was at the centre of a violent tit-for-tat feud with twins Mario and Carlo Rea.

He was also interviewed in connection with the murder of gangster Kevin “Gerbil” Carroll in 2010 after guns used in the killing were found near his gym.

Windsor owns Truth Gym on Coatbridge Main Street. He was banned from boxing over a doping violation in 2013.

The shamed fighter fled to Spain in 2006 after assaulting a gangland rival but was later jailed.

Windsor married Mihaela at Airdrie registry office in 2014 after meeting at a boxing show in Glasgow’s Charing Cross. Their relationship ended last year.

Police Scotland confirmed the case had been reported to them but said it was being treated as a “civil matter”.

Craig Jr was a P2 pupil at St Augustine’s Primary in Coatbridge and speaks English and “some Romanian”, Windsor said.

Romanian lawyer Oana Ptere, of OJ Solicitors based in Glasgow, is acting on the dad’s behalf.

She said: “The proceedings are with the Romanian authorities at the moment and there is an appeal date which we are waiting on.”

Windsor added: “If you told me 20 guys were after me, I wouldn’t be bothered but with my son, I feel like crying. I want the UK Government to step in and get my son returned to Scotland.”

Mihaela couldn’t be contacted for comment.
