Gartcairn will relish Junior Cup occasion

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Gartcairn No.2 Scott Mills will relish Saturday’s Scottish Junior Cup clash with Tayport, and says it’s an opportunity to bag some silverware.

The East Region Midlands League side visit MTC Park for the second round tie and Mills says cup days are amongst the best in the calendar.

He said: “I can’t wait. Tayport are a big name in the old Junior football circles, they have good pedigree, it’s a big club, and they’re having an all right season.

“We’re at home and a Scottish Cup day is always one of the best days, so I’m really looking forward to it.

“The Scottish Junior Cup is massive; it’s a chance to win something.

“I’ve won stuff before, but there are guys who have played 10 to 12 years and who have not won anything, so every year you enter a competition, that gives you an opportunity to win something.

“If you’ve won something before it gives you the taste to win it again, so competitions like this are brilliant.

“I love the cup competitions, because you get the opportunity to try for a trophy, get your hands on some silverware.

“People that have experienced it want more of it, people who have never experienced it want their first taste of it, and that’s what we’re all trying to do as a group.”

Mills, whose side knocked out Aberdeen East End in round one, added: “We know we’re a relatively new club in terms of history and all that, so we know we need to grow as a club.

“The way to do that is by playing good football. If we can play good football, win trophies and be high up leagues, hopefully people will get the wee notion to come along and try and help us out, watch us and enjoy the experience. “That’s what we’re trying for.” Gartcairn warmed up for Saturday’s clash with a comfortable 2-0 win at Ardeer Thistle in the West of Scotland League Conference B, with goals from Ross Mcneil and Terry Hewitt, a recent signing from Sauchie.

Mills said: “We’re delighted, it was probably one of our most consistent and controlled performances of the season.

“Big Terry was my captain at Blantyre, and I was delighted that we were able to get him up to Gartcairn.

“We knew Ross could get us goals and fire us up the league table – that’s what he’s done so far.”
