Kerr thanks dad and Mccoist for hand in goal

Airdrie defender Josh Kerr revealed he had his dad and Rangers legend Ally Mccoist to thank for his first goal in almost a year.

The 23-year-old netted the Diamonds’ final goal of their 3-0 win at Falkirk when he headed home at the back post 10 minutes from time.

It was his first goal since a 4-2 win at Clyde in December 2020 and he admitted some sound advice from his dad before the game, as well as hearing Ally Mccoist’s Sky Sports commentary on Scott Mctominay’s last-gasp winner over Israel last week had a hand in his effort.

Kerr explained: “it’s funny because I had a conversation with my dad the morning of the game.

“He gave me a talking to, saying stop going front post go back post. You better go back post today [at crosses], so I dedicate that goal to my dad.

“He was saying every time I go into the box, I’m running underneath it.

“Mccoist was talking about it the other night in the Scotland game as well when Mctominay scored.

“Mccoist said always hang about the back post and you’ll get goals, and that’s what’s happened for me.

“The boy was marking me, but I shrugged him off. I was a lot more aggressive and we wanted it more all over the park - and I think that showed with the goal.

“It was Boxing Day when I last scored. It’s something I want to add to my game.”

The last time Airdrie faced Falkirk in August, the Bairns ran out 2-1 winners.

But since then, Airdrie have slowly but surely climbed the table and now sit joint-second with Cove Rangers after winning four of their last five outings.

Kerr added: “we’ve kept things quiet amongst ourselves before now, but we’ve felt that performance coming.

“We know that if we keep doing what we are doing and we keep boys fit - near enough every game this season we’ve had a couple of boys out - it will all come together.

“Whatever we are doing seems to be working and we’ve got nobody to fear.”
