Newboots dothetrick forgallagher

- Ben Banks

Calum Gallagher has invested in a new pair of boots – and he hopes his latest cleats can help Airdrie to big win over Cove Rangers this weekend.

Ian Murray’s Diamonds are a point clear of their rivals at the top of League One after a 1-0 win over East Fife at Bayview on Saturday.

Gallagher netted the only goal, the 12th time in 13 matches he’s scored against the Methill club, with his upgraded footwear.

Last week ,Gallagher missed an open goal in Airdrie’s 3-1 win over Peterhead, prompting the change.

And the 26-year-old joked:“i needed that goal. I had a shocker of a miss last week against Peterhead so I retired the boots I was wearing for that and got a new pair!

“I got two assists but I kicked the ball back the way when it was on the goal line. I won’t ever watch it back as I can’t put myself through it again!

“I’m glad to get back on the scoresheet as I’ve got a decent record against East Fife. It’s a fixture I look forward to.”

The Diamonds have now won five of their last six games, with the only defeat on the run coming against A lloa last month, and Gallagher said:“it’s a very good run.

“The first couple of games of the season we were still gelling with a lot of new boys in over the summer. There was also a new style of play to get used to. It took us a while to get going but our performances have only got better.

“It has been really good, with the exception of the Alloa game. We’ve bounced back from that well.

“The important thing now is keeping it going. In years gone by, I think not being consistent has stopped us challenging as we should be.

“I know last year we finished second but we dropped points against teams at the bottom of the league who were struggling and we took our foot off the gas in important games.

“We need to ensure that stays out of our game, and if it does, we will be right up there by the end of it.”

Second-placed Cove travel to Airdrie this weekend in what will prove to be a crucial League One title race fixture.

Gallagher doesn’t see the game as season-defining, but he’s aware it would provide Murray’s men a big boost if victory was achieved.

The striker added:“it’s a big game. I think for us, it’s all about extending our lead at the top of the table.

“If we put the foot down now, it makes it more difficult for teams to catch us.

“So that’s the aim. It’s a bit of a six-pointer. It’s not a game that will define the season, but it would be very welcome if we could get some breathing room at the top.”
