Call for crash barrier after car hits house

Calls have been made for new safety measures to be introduced in Calderbank after a car crashed into a house in the village.

The vehicle came off the road on the village’s Main Street at 8.45am last Tuesday, November 16, and collided with the front wall of the terraced property.

Emergency services raced to the scene, with the female driver of the car being taken to hospital for treatment.

Airdrie South councillor Michael Coyle said:“the car went through the fence and right into the front of the house, impacting and damaging it badly.

“Police and the fire brigade were all there, and officers were directing traffic past the scene in single file while all their vehicles were in the street.”

Councillor Coyle has now written to the council calling for a safety barrier to be installed on the street.

He explained:“i am requesting that a metal safety barrier be erected at the bad bend at 46 Main Street, Calderbank, as the children who attend the nearby Calderbank Primary School could have been involved in this major traffic accident.

“Because cars are parking up on the pavements, it is making life more difficult for other drivers and something needs to be done.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland told the Advertiser:“officers were called following a crash which happened on Main Street in Calderbank, Airdrie, at around 8.45am on Tuesday, November 16. “A vehicle left the roadway and collided with a property.

“The female driver was taken to hospital for treatment. Specialist services were contacted to assess the building and recovery was arranged for the vehicle.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: “We were alerted at 8.47am on Tuesday, November 16, to reports of a collision involving a car and a building on Main Street, Calderbank.

“Operations control immediately mobilised two appliances to the location.

“One casualty was handed over to the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and crews left the scene after ensuring that the area was made safe.”
