Fordyce: Airdrie were “rubbish”

-

Captain Callum Fordyce branded Airdrie “rubbish”after they were knocked off the League One summit in their top of the table clash with Cove Rangers.

The defender reckoned Airdrie let themselves down in the 2-0 defeat and turned in a performance well below the standards Ian Murray’s men have set in their recent run of five wins in the previous six games.

In the second half Fordyce didn’t make the connection he would have liked with a header which went back across goal, and Dylan Easton was denied after a poor kick from Cove keeper Stuart Mckenzie gave him a golden chance.

And Fordyce sighed:“it wasn’t good enough. It’s as simple as that.

“We can’t make excuses. It was rubbish and they were better than us on the day.

“When you are on top you’ve got to take your chances, especially in a game of this importance.

“Cove are a good side and so are we so when you get chances, you have to take them. I didn’t think there were many clear cut chances in the game.

“We had one with Dylan and I’ve had a header across the box, but if you look at their two chances that was the only real chances they had and we got punished.”

It may be advantage Cove right now, but he believes the leaders will continue to chop and change and it’s still too early in the season to be worried about slipping off the summit.

The 29-year-old added:“everybody is frustrated, but nothing is won in November – and we said the same when we were top.

“We can’t be too disheartened. There’s a good group in there.”
