Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser

There’s still time to make festive season special for those in need

- JUDITH TONNER

There’s a week left to donate to the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser’s annual toy appeal – and we’re asking Monklands residents to help make it a merry Christmas for hundreds of youngsters across the area.

A total of 200 items have so far been handed in at the appeal’s three supermarket collection points at Morrisons and Tesco in Airdrie and at Asda in Coatbridge.

Gifts are being collected and sorted by members of Coatbridge, Airdrie and Monklands Rotary club, who have so far been able to supply much-needed items to the area’s community nurses to distribute among local families.

The appeal is running for another week, until Wednesday, December 15 – and with several more community groups hoping to receive donations from this year’s appeal, all items given during the busy

Christmas shopping period will be very gratefully received.

We are asking generous local residents to donate toys, games, books and toiletries for youngsters aged from birth to 16, and

place them in any of the three supermarket collection trollies; while businesses and organisations with lots of items to donate can also call 07789 540609 to arrange a special pick-up. Pre-school toys and gifts are especially needed, along with gifts for older teens such as perfume and aftershave gift sets, toiletries, books and vouchers.

Staff at the three supermarkets are generously collecting donations in decorated trollies at the front of each store and storing them to be picked up by volunteers from the Rotary club.

Members are then sorting through the items at their weekly meetings.

Organisers are also contacting further good causes and community groups to help add to the total of presents arriving under trees across Monklands in time for Christmas morning.

This year is the ninth annual toy appeal run involving the Advertiser, local supermarkets and community volunteers; with Rotary members also ensuring that gifts are collected, stored and distributed using Covid-19-safe quarantine measures first introduced last year.
