Bob and Betsy Miller received the gift, containing an array of speciality goods including handmade mince pies, British craft beers and Belgian chocolates, from Alison Grieve, retail director at the Airdrie and Coatbridge Specsavers stores.

The deserving Monklands couple had just called in to their local opticians with a tray of chocolates for their favourite team as a Christmas thank you before being surprised with the gift.

Alison told the Advertiser: “bob and Betsy have been customers with us for more than 10 years now and it’s a delight every time we see them.

“We wanted to give a small token of appreciation for all that they do for our community.

“Bob does a fantastic job of looking after Coatdyke Bowling Club, which acts as a much-needed social hub for many in the area. Bob and Betsy have also done some amazing charitable work with Women’s Aid over the years.

“They are both so selfless and dedicate much of their time to the community. We wanted to give them the chance to treat themselves.”

Bob said: “it really is a lovely surprise. Alison and the team have always been very considerate to the needs of Betsy and me and have been a great supporter of the bowling club too.

“The staff have become friends of ours over the past 10 years. We are very grateful for the gift.”
