‘Angel’ came as mum gave birth beside M8

Midwife heard Nicole’s screams and rushed to help

- STAFF REPORTER

A Coatbridge mum dramatically gave birth to her baby boy on the hard shoulder of Scotland’s busiest motorway on New Year’s Day after a midwife heard her screams while walking her dog.

Nicole Traynor, 28, was on her way to Wishaw General Hospital when her dad was forced to pull over at the side of the M8 as she went into labour.

Nicole was in the front passenger seat when she felt the top of her baby’s head suddenly appear.

In a welcome stroke of luck, an off-duty midwife who was walking her dog with her daughter appeared after hearing Nicole’s screams while crossing the motorway bridge.

The NHS worker, known only as Susan, sprang into action and delivered healthy baby boy Maverick David Cartwright.

Ambulance staff then arrived and took mum and baby to hospital at 1pm, with both being released home later that day.

Nicole said: “The full experience was really traumatic. I was in such panic when I realised I had to push.

“I thought my dad was going to have to deliver the baby but a woman walking past with her dog heard us and happened to be a midwife.

“My dad told her I was having a baby and she ran right down and jumped over a fence to help me.

“I was just so eternally grateful. As soon as I saw her it was like an angel had come to help.

“I just thought, ‘I can’t do this’, but she told me I could and was so reassuring which helped a lot.

“It was fate that she happened to be there at that exact time for me. It was like magic. I couldn’t believe it.”

Nicole had begun to feel pain on the morning of New Year’s Day and decided to go to hospital as her contractions began to get stronger.

Her water broke as dad David Traynor arrived to take her and partner, David Cartwright, 25, and their two-year-old daughter Sophie to hospital. The family were all in the car as the baby began to arrive.

With toddler Sophia in the back of the car with an ipad, Nicole prepared to have her dad deliver her baby in the front seat.

It was then midwife Susan heard the commotion and ran to the family’s aid.

She delivered the newborn, who weighed a healthy 6lbs 11ozs.

The hero midwife is believed to work at the Princess Royal Maternity Hospital in Glasgow, and told the family it was her first time welcoming a baby into the world from a car.

Nicole is now desperate to try and track Susan down to thank her properly.

She said: “I would really love to find her to thank her again and show her pictures of the baby she brought into this world.

“I could not have done it without her and I would really love to see her again in person.

“It would be great if she could somehow get in touch with me.”
