Put best feet forward for daily challenge

- JUDITH TONNER

Supporters of St Andrew’s Hospice are putting their best foot forward in the charity’s first fundraiser of 2022 – by completing 5k each day throughout January.

Participants are being challenged to run, jog, walk or cycle the distance for 30 days this month, in support of the hospice’s vital work with patients from across Lanarkshire

They can get involved through the hospice’s online fundraising page, with fundraisers at the Airdrie charity hoping it will get the new year off to the best possible start.

Neil Gray, the Airdrie MSP, took part in the challenge last year, noting how the charity’s fundraising had been impacted by the pandemic and lockdowns.

He told us last year “It’s been really difficult for charities to raise funds during Covid as their ability to do so has been completely restricted; we need to do everything we can to help our local good causes.”

Johanne Foley also took part in the hospice’s daily running challenge in 2021, completing it in March, following the birth of baby daughter Fawn.

She said: “I decided to raise money for the hospice with my newborn daughter as it was a good way to get fit again and get some fresh air whilst helping others.

“As a nurse, I’ve seen first-hand the amazing care given to patients and their families over the years in the hospice and out in the community; they also support and advise wards when needed and are always there for everyone.

“I’ve also been lucky enough to be educated by the wonderful staff at St Andrew’s Hospice.

“Thanks to their wisdom and support, I improved my knowledge and changed my outlook, and I’d like to think that, as a result, I’ve given better care to my patients.”

Anyone interested in taking up the hospice’s January challenge can register by visiting Justgiving to set up a fundraising page.

Hospice officials say the running, walking and cycling efforts will help “support our patients and their loved ones across Lanarkshire during these tough times”.

Participants who would like a St Andrew’s Hospice T-shirt are asked to contact Bruce Mackenzie by emailing Bruce.mackenzie@standrews.scot. nhs.uk or calling 01236 766951.
