Club works very hard to support charities

- JUDITH TONNER

Fundraising events at a popular Airdrie venue helped raise the impressive sum of £5400 for prostate cancer charities.

Ex-footballer John Gahagan, former referee John Rowbotham and comedian Joe Camay were the speakers at a sportsman’s dinner held at Airdrie workmen’s club on Broomknoll Street.

The event was organised by Bobby Clark, who thanked all those who helped make the event a success; paticularly William Cumming of Park’s of Hamilton and Craig Armstrong of Indigo for their sponsorship.

Organisers chose to raise money in memory of Alex Mccartney, who sadly died of prostate cancer.

Meanwhile, club members also held an event to celebrate the 2021 bicentennial of Airdrie as a town burgh.

The Magic Drifters and entertainer Christian topped the bill at the special gathering, and the proceeds will be split between ongoing refurbishments at the town-centre venue and being distributed to local charities.

A club spokesperson told the Advertiser: “Special thanks go to Councillor Michael Coyle for his help and sponsors Jamie Gillespie, Jim Gallacher, Tony Kane, Steve Kelly and Michael Hoy.

“This also helped the 200th celebrations go with a bang.”
