Drivers diverted as road to close for work
A busy route in Airdrie will be closed to traffic for five days from next week while installation and surfacing of traffic islands takes place.
The work at Lancaster Avenue in Chapelhall is scheduled for January 31 to February 4, with the road being closed for its whole length between Bo’ness Road and the A73 Bellside Road.
Drivers will be diverted onto a stretch of the A8, between the Newhouse and Chapelhall roundabouts, for the duration of the project.
A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council told the Advertiser:“work will be carried out to install and surface additional pedestrian islands on Lancaster Avenue.
“It requires a temporary road closure to ensure the safety of the workers involved. The diversion takes traffic via the A8 Glasgow & Edinburgh Road to limit the amount of vehicles, particularly heavy goods vehicles, travelling through the village.”
Chapelhall is often used as a route for vehicles travelling to and from the M80, including significant lorry traffic, with residents having highlighted the road safety issues of having such large vehicles using the village’s local roads.
Work has taken place in recent years to ensure HGVS use the Lancaster Avenue route instead of Lauchope Street through the village, which is intended for local traffic only.
Plans are also in development to construct a new east Airdrie link road from Chapelhall to the A73 dual carriageway south of Cumbernauld, reducing congestion on the main roads through Airdrie and providing access to the new Monklands Hospital site at Wester Moffat.
