Sharp sequel outruns its predecessor

Ryan Gosling shines in a challenging role, Sylvia Hoeks makes for a chilling villainess and a returning Harrison Ford adds old-school charisma.

The film looks and sounds fantastic but, crucially, also delivers plentiful emotional beats.

From the scorched, desert-like ruins of Las Vegas to use of haunting fog, shadow, water, snow and, of course, rain, Canadian Villeneuve is a visionary working at the peak of his powers.
