Rent rights consultation views
Tenants across Airdrie and Coatbridge are being urged to give their views in a Scottish Government consultation on rights for those living in rented properties.
Neil Gray MSP is asking residents to take part in the current survey on proposals aiming to “deliver a fairer rented sector that meets the needs of tenants and welcomes responsible landlords”.
It includes plans to restrict winter evictions, introduce a new housing standard including energy efficiency requirements, establish a regulator and rent controls for the private sector, and increase flexibility for tenants to personalise their homes and keep their pets.
Airdrie & Shotts representative Mr Gray, who is the convener of Holyrood’s social justice and social security committee, told the Advertiser: “This consultation aims to find out exactly what is needed from the tenant’s point of view and to enshrine in law the basics that a landlord must do.
“While many of those living in rented accommodation are well looked after by their landlords, whether social or private, there are still those who are being treated deplorably.
“I would urge everyone to complete the consultation as none of us know if or when we may need to live in rented accommodation, and those who are doing so just now deserve a well looked after, fit for purpose place to call their home.”
The proposed measures form part of the planned Housing to 2040 strategy – a finalised version of which is to be published next year incorporating the results of the consultation, which runs until April 15.
“Elements of the proposals” are then due to be included in a housing bill going before the Scottish Parliament next year.
